Serbajadi Chinese Radish – Raphanus sativus var. Hortensis Backer (Cruciferae)

Used significantly in Japanese cuisine, the white radish which is also referred to as Oriental or Chinese radish is a mild flavoured but large, white radish. Growing radishes is easy, perhaps the fastest to harvest of all vegetables.  Chinese Radish is an annual or biennial vegetable with a white taproot which is usually eaten as a salad or cooked in soups. In addition, they take up little space in your garden. As a result, it is very popular in the back yard garden. It’s sharp, zippy taste livens up salads and is great with dips and dressings.  It can also be preserved in salt or pickled. The leaves are also rich in calcium, iron, protein and Vitamin A and C. The roots can be stored for some weeks without the leaves and kept in a cool dry place. If left in the ground, the root tends to become woody.

Type of vegetable: Edible root

Edible parts: Leaves and root

DIRECTION OF USE

Best Soil: Like other vegetables, Radishes will grow in average soils. Radish seeds germinate in a matter of days. While working the soil make sure to remove rocks and stones.

How to plant: Sow about 20 radish seeds 1/2 inch deep across the bed and cover with a layer of fertile soil. Space them 1 1/2 to two inches apart. Separate rows 8 to 10 inches apart. We recommend double rows, with wider rows between the double rows to afford easy access. After the seeds have germinated, thin seedlings to 2 inches apart all round rows to avoid crowding. Broadcast spreading is also common, and easy to do. Prepare a square or rectangular area and spread the seed out across the entire area. Then, lightly sprinkle loose soil over the area.

When to harvest: 20 to 30 days. Can be pulled for eating at various sizes during the course of development. Choose only tender, small and fresh radishes.

How to harvest: Carefully lift whole plants out

Care: Water the plants thoroughly. Leaf rot often occurs and the infested leaves should be removed to prevent rapid spread of the disease.
